Ruppersberger Calls on Congress and the Nation to Donate "Hero Miles" for Family Members of Wounded Troops in Honor of Memorial Day
(Washington, DC) - In honor of Memorial Day, Congressman C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD), Congressman Patrick Murphy (D-PA), and other Members of Congress will issue a Congressional Challenge for "Operation Hero Miles". The Representatives will call on Congress and the Nation to turn their unused frequent flyer miles into "Hero Miles" for the family members of wounded troops. Congressman Ruppersberger and his staff will donate 20,000 miles to the cause.
Congressman Ruppersberger created "Operation Hero Miles" in October, 2003, after visiting BWI-Thurgood Marshall Airport in Maryland's 2nd Congressional District. At that time, military personnel on R & R leave were dropped off in Baltimore and forced to pay their way home from there. The Congressman worked together with the airlines and created "Operation Hero Miles" to give the troops free plane tickets home. Now that R & R travel is paid for by the military, "Operation Hero Miles" gives family members of wounded servicemen and women free plane tickets to travel to a military hospital to be by the bedside of injured loved one.
In honor of Memorial Day, the airlines participating in "Operation Hero Miles" have agreed to match miles donated over Memorial Day Weekend from 6 a.m. Friday, May 25, 2007, to 11:59 p.m. Monday, May 28, 2007. Ten airlines are currently participating in the program. Language in the 2005 Defense Authorization Act authorizes the non-profit Fisher House Foundation to hand out the free tickets to family members of troops. Miles can be donated at www.heromiles.org.
