MBNA Motorsports Press ReleaseOperation Hero Miles Gets Boost at Homestead RaceNovember 13, 2003 Homestead, FL: Operation Hero Miles, the grassroots program that encourages frequent flyers to donate their miles to members of the U.S. military, will have its awareness enhanced during this weekend's NASCAR races at Homestead-Miami Speedway. MBNA America Bank, issuer of the official NASCAR credit card and sponsor of two Joe Gibbs Racing entries, will display the logo of www.heromiles.org on both race cars. The No. 18 Interstate Batteries/MBNA Chevrolet driven by Bobby Labonte in Sunday's For 400 Winston Cup race and the No. 18 MBNA Chevrolet driven by Coy Gibbs in Saturday's Ford Busch race will carry decals of the charity. Operation Hero Miles was started last month by Maryland Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger of Baltimore as a way to diminish the financial burden on U.S. military personnel who are flown to U.S. east coast airports from Iraq and Afghanistan for 15 days of rest and relaxation. Current law requires them to pay their own way for connecting flights to their hometowns. The average fare faced by a soldier equals half of an Army private's monthly salary. Operation Hero Miles has recruited six major airlines, United, American, Delta, Southwest, Alaska and Horizon, to allow frequent flyer members to donate miles that can be converted into free tickets to send military personnel home for the holidays.
